"What I don't understand is why they do the things they do. I'd rather fix a machine any day than deal with people problems on the floor."
Factory Manager's Comment to Bilingual Skills Services LLC

"The United States in the midst of a wave of immigration. The rapidity of the influx, coupled with its sheer size, means that American society will confront momentous social, cultural and political change during the coming decades and generations."
Brookings Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy March 2004

The Midwest is the in midst of an explosive Latino population growth, which began in the late 1980's as Latino seasonal workers began to settle and become members of rural communities. By working year round, the income and hopes of Latinos began to grow. Like the immigrants before them, Latinos began to pursue the American Dream of a better future for themselves and their children.

Wisconsin's Hispanic population has grown by 23% since 2000 while the white, black and Asian population grew less, according to U.S. Census 2005 estimates . Overall the total population growth for Wisconsin showed a slight gain of 2.7% while the Hispanic population, although small in number, increased 4.3%. The largest percentage increase, 41.4%, was in Brown County as jobs in the meat packing industry attracted more Latinos to settle in the Green bay area.

This rapid growth brings with it the potential for greater cultural clash - defined as the misunderstandings and disputes that sometimes occur when cultural differences - ways of problem solving, behaviors, are not recognized or fully understood. Cross Cultural Competency Seminars presented either in Spanish and English, first identify the differences between Latino and main stream American Anglo cultures and second, train the Anglo and the Latino how to bridge this cultural and language gap in their specific workplace.
